Sault Ste-Marie, Ontario

A welcoming community of 73,000; Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario is one of the RNIP participating communities.

The pilot is designed to support economic development in Sault Ste. Marie and strengthen its local business’s capacity to develop and retain a skilled workforce.

This pilot is being managed in partnership between the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, FutureSSM, the Sault Ste. Marie Local Immigration Partnership and the Sault Community Career Centre.

Community Requirements for Employers

In order to be designated to participate in the Pilot in Sault Ste. Marie, the employer must:

  • Be located within the boundaries of the City of Sault Ste. Marie;
  • Have been in active business in Sault Ste. Marie for at least three years prior to providing the candidate with a job offer;
  • If the employer is the product of a new investment in the community, a business case shall be provided for assessment by the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, which will include financial capacity to execute the plan identified through bank information and the intent to establish based on a lease or purchase of building in community;
  • Provide detailed information on their labour needs;
  • Have at least three full-time employees who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents who work at the location where the candidate will work;
  • Provide a valid job offer co-signed by the primary candidate that must be for a full-time (minimum of 1,560 hours a year and a minimum of 30 hours of paid work per week) and permanent position (non-seasonal and of indeterminate duration).
  • The wage for the job being offered is within the range of wages for that particular occupation within the specified region of Ontario (as identified by the federal government) where the candidate will be working;
  • Not receive any form of payment in exchange for the job offer;
  • Demonstrate his/her efforts made to recruit a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident prior to providing the job offer

Priority NOC Groups

Preference will be given to applicants with recent experience in one of the following National Occupation Classification (NOC). Please note that other NOCs may be considered.

  • NOC-11 – Professional occupations in business and finance
  • NOC-21 – Professional occupations in natural and applied sciences
  • NOC-30 – Professional occupations in nursing
  • NOC-31 – Professional occupations in health (except nursing)
  • NOC-40 – Professional occupations in education services
  • NOC-74 – Other installers, repairers and servicers and material handler
  • NOC-75 – Transport and heavy equipment operation and related maintenance occupations
  • NOC-76 – Trades helpers, construction labourers and related occupations
  • NOC-22 – Technical occupations related to natural and applied sciences.
  • NOC-32 – Technical occupations in health
  • NOC-34 – Assisting occupations in support of health services.
  • NOC-44 – Care providers and educational, legal and public protection support occupations
  • NOC-72 – Industrial, electrical and construction trades
  • NOC-75 – Transport and heavy equipment operation and related maintenance occupations
  • NOC-76 – Trades helpers, construction labourers and related occupations
  • NOC-92 – Processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators
  • NOC-94 – Processing and manufacturing machine operators and related production workers
  • NOC-95 – Assemblers in manufacturing
  • NOC-96 – Labourers in processing, manufacturing and utilities
  • NOC-07-09 – Middle management occupations in trades, transportation, production and utilities
  • NOC 6321 – Chefs

Community Requirements for Applicants

In addition to the federal eligibility criteria, applicants for the RNIP program will be assessed on their intention to live and work in the community after they have received their permanent residence visa.

The candidates will be prioritized for recommendation using a point-based system. At the moment, applicants will need to achieve a total score of 70 or above to be considered for recommendation based on the following requirements:

  1. The applicant has received a job offer for a job in one of the priority NOC groups = 55 points
  2. The applicant’s age on the day the application is received:
  • 18 to 36 = 6 points
  • 37 to 47= 3 points
  • 48 and over = 0 points
  1. The applicant has work experience in one of the priority NOC groups listed above:
  • 2 years= 2 points
  • 3 years = 4 points
  • 4 years= 6 points
  • 5 years= 8 points
  • 6+ years= 10 points

BONUS: Applicant who has at least one year of continuous full-time work experience in Sault Ste. Marie within the past five years can obtained 8 Bonus points.

  1. The applicant has studied at a post-secondary institution in Sault Ste. Marie:
  • 2+ years within the past 5 years= 6 points
  • 1 year within the past 5 years= 3 points
  1. The applicant already resides in the community:
  • The candidate owns property within the boundaries of Sault Ste. Marie and resides in that property at the time of application= 8 points
  • The candidate leases property within the boundaries of Sault Ste. Marie and resides in that property at the time of application= 4 points
  1. The applicant has personal ties to established members of the community:
  • has an immediate family member (parent, sibling, child) who is a permanent resident or Canadian citizen that has been living within the boundaries of Sault Ste. Marie for a minimum of one year = 10 points
  • has an extended family member (grandparent, uncle, aunt, cousin, niece, or nephew), a friend, or a representative of an established community organization who is a permanent resident or Canadian citizen and has been living within the boundaries of Sault Ste. Marie for a minimum of one year= 5 points
  1. The applicant has visited Sault Ste. Marie for at least 5 nights within the past three years and met with at least 2 employers in their line of work during their visit= 8 points
  2. The applicant has authentic knowledge of and interest in a recreational, cultural, or lifestyle activity found in Sault Ste. Marie = 5 points
  3. The applicant’s spouse or common law partner has a valid job offer for a job in one of the priority NOC groups = 10 points

OR:

The applicant’s spouse or common-law partner has at least two years of work experience (full-time and continuous) within a priority NOC group = 5 points

  1. The applicant’s spouse or common-law partner has English or French language skills that exceed CLB/NCLC 5 in all categories = 5 points

Application Process

Step 1: Make sure you meet the IRCC Federal Eligibility Requirements

Step 2: Find full-time permanent employment in Sault Ste. Marie\

Step 3: Meet all the Community Requirements

Step 4: Download and complete the RNIP Application Form IMM 5911E

Step 5: Submit RNIP Application Form

Step 6: A Sault Ste. Marie RNIP Coordinator will request further documentation from you including your Resume, Language credentials, Educational credentials and any other supporting documents

Step 7: Your application will be reviewed by the Community Recommendation Committee

Step 8: If it is determined that you meet the requirements of RNIP, you will be given a nomination letter from the Community Recommendation Committee via e-mail.

Step 9: Using the nomination letter, you can apply directly to IRCC for your Permanent Residency.

Step 10: IRCC will do further review, including medicals, financial documents and criminal record checks.

Step 11: Once you receive your Permanent Residency, you can make arrangements for you and your family to move to Sault Ste. Marie.

Timeline:

  • Eligible applications will be retained for 1 year.
  • Applications will be reviewed by the Community Recommendation Committee on a monthly basis.
  • Job application timelines will vary depending on the employer and job you are applying for.
